GALLE:
A heavy downpour that began at the lunch interval washed out the afternoon session on the fourth day of the third and final cricket Test between England and Sri Lanka here.

The ground was covered at the scheduled tea time of 2:30 pm (0900 GMT) as persistent rain dampened hopes of further play at the Galle International Stadium on Friday.

England, following on 418 runs behind after being dismissed for a new low of 81 against Sri Lanka in the first innings, were due to resume at their lunch score of 102-1.

Left-handed Alastair Cook was unbeaten on 53 and Ian Bell was on 17 in an unbroken stand of 35 for the second wicket.

Sri Lanka, who lead 1-0 in the series, are looking for a 2-0 scoreline that will lift them to second place in the official Test rankings behind Australia.

Continued wet weather has been forecast for the next 48 hours.
