Mumbai: Half centuries by Parthiv Patel and opener Nilesh Modi put Gujarat in a commanding position against Railways on the second day of their five-day Ranji Trophy Plate League final, being played at the Barbourne Stadium here today.
At close of play, Gujarat had reached 140 for two in reply to Railways first innings' score of 260, with Nilesh Modi on 66 and night watchman, Mohnish Parmar on zero holding fort for Gujarat.
Earlier in the morning, resuming from their overnight score of 202 for seven, Harshad Rawale reached his well deserved century and tailender Santosh Saxena, who made 30 in 60 balls with three hits to the fence and two over the fence, took Railways over the 250 mark. Railways was bowled out for 260 with off spinner Mohnish Parmar taking 4 for 63.
Gujarat openers began their reply on a confident note, and both Nilesh Modi and Rajesh Tabiyar did not face much difficulty in seeing of the new ball. They scored 53 runs for the opening wicket before Tabiyar edged a delivery from Sanjay Bangar to the keeper Mahesh Rawat for 14.
Parthiv Patel, who then joined Modi, settled in well with Parthiv being the more attacking of the two.
Modi, who was compact in defence and was also quick to punish the loose ball, brought up his 50 in 123 balls with eight hits to the fence.
At the other end, Gujarat captain Parthiv Patel also reached his 50 that came in just 94 balls with eight hits to the fence.
However, after the two had put on 87 runs for the second wicket, Parthiv was bowled by Santosh Saxena playing on 52 with just two overs remaining for the day and the score on 140 for two.
