Bangalore: India were 74/2 in their first essay at lunch on day one of the third Test against Australia at WACA in Perth on Wednesday.

Openers Sehwag (29 off 58, 6X4s) and Jaffer (16, 2X4s) provided India a bright start adding 57 runs in no time.

Sehwag, yet again, failed to convert his start into big one when he edged the attempted cut to Gilchrist off Johnson. He cut, drove, slashed, flicked Aussie new-ball bowlers to the fence with ease. He was particulary severe on Lee dispatching him to the fence for thrice.

Jaffer, on the other hand, was his usual confident self  and played some silken drives and looked set for a big one before he edged a shot of good length on off stump line from Lee to a regulation catch to Gilchrist. Sachin (14) joined Dravid (2) and ensured that there was no further damage.

India have left out Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh. Virender Sehwag and Irfan Pathan have been included in their place.

The Australians, leading the series 2-0, will be without the services of their towering opener Mathew Hayden, who has not recovered from a hamstring injury.

The Western Australian southpaw Chris Rogers, touted to be a highly talented opener, will take his place at the top of the order. The home team has also opted to go in with a all-pace attack with Shaun Tait coming in place of Brad Hogg, hoping to capitalise on the conditions at WACA.

Brief Score (at lunch, D-1):

India Ist innings 74/2 (Sehwag 29, Jaffer 16, Tendulkar 14 n o; Lee 31/2, Johnson 16/1) Vs Australia.
