Melbourne: New South Wales captain Simon Katich was Thursday named the Sheffield Shield player of the season by Cricket Australia (CA).
Katich, who will lead NSW into this weekend's season final against Victoria in Sydney, is the competition's leading scorer with 1,328 runs, just 136 runs below the all-time record of Michael Bevan's 1,464 set in the 2004-05 season.
The former Test batsman has scored five centuries with a top score of 306 and has a season average of 94.86.
Katich won the Sheffield Shield Player of the Series award by six votes from Queensland all-rounder Ashley Noffke.
South Australian opening batsman Matthew Elliott picked up the award as the domestic one-day player of the year in his final season of interstate cricket.
