Dubai: South Africa were fined on Monday for maintaining a slow over-rate in the drawn first Test against India in Chennai.

Captain Graeme Smith was ordered to forfeit 20 per cent of his match fee and each of his players will have to cough up 10 per cent of their match fee in the shape of fines, the International Cricket Council said in a statement.

Match referee Roshan Mahanama imposed the fine after Smith's side were ruled to be two overs short of their time allotted bowling target in the test which concluded in Chennai on Sunday.

The second match of the three-Test series begins in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
