WCL Div-5: United States, Afghan complete semis~~ line-up

Jersey Channel (England): United States of America and Afghan join the hosts Jersey and Nepal to complete the semi-finals line-up in the ICC World Cricket League Div-5.

Afghan and Jersey advanced to the semis' from Group-B. Although Singapore ensured parity with Afghan (seven points from five games) but failed to make the cut with poor run-rate.

USA and Nepal made it to last-four round from Group-A.

The hosts will take on USA in the first semis' to be played on Friday while the bouyant Nepal face Afghan in the other on the same day.

The final four from the 12 teams that started the event are hosts Jersey, the USA, Nepal and Afghanistan with the semi-finals pairings matching up Jersey and the USA with Nepal facing off against Afghanistan.

The winners of Friday"s matches will not only progress through to Saturday"s final but will also join Hong Kong, Fiji, Tanzania and Italy in the six-team ICC WCL Div. 4 set for the Tanzanian capital of Dar Es Salaam from Oct 4 to 11.

In turn, the top two teams from that tournament will progress to WCL Div. 3 in Argentina Jan 2009 and hope to finish in the top two to qualify for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2009 in the UAE, which incorporates Divisions 1 and 2.

The top four Associate or Affiliate teams from the ICC World Cup Qualifier will book their place at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 to be staged in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Rain played spoilsport on the final league ties played on Thursday.

The games between Nepal and the USA and Mozambique and Vanuatu were abandoned without a ball being bowled while in the other two matches, Singapore beat Japan by 52 runs and Germany defeated Norway by six wickets both by virtue of D/L Method.

Singapore, needing to beat Japan by a massive margin to leapfrog Afghan on net run-rate, was out of contention for a place in the semis after it was restricted to 201 all out in 35.4 overs.

A 52-run victory only earned it third place in Group-B behind Jersey and Afghanistan.

Results (Group-A):

Norway 145 all out in 47.1 overs (Zaheer Ashiq 47, Shahid Ahmed 33; Farroq Ahmed 3/19) lost to Germany 151/4 in 37.5 overs (Asif Khan 47, Farroq Ahmed 32) by six wickets.

Nepal 182 all out (Gyanendra Malla 75; Lennox Cush 3/28, Khawaja Shuja 2/30) Vs United States. Match abandoned due to rain.

Mozambique 88/4 in 22 overs Vs Vanuata. Match abandoned.


Singapore 201 all out in 35.4 overs (Chetan Suryavamshi 57, Chaminda Kumarage 41; Yuta Matsubara 4/53) beat Japan 67/5 in 22 overs. by virtue of D/L method.
