ONGC maintained a clean slate in the group stage with three wins in as many games. ONGC (13 pts) along with Air India (5 pts) advanced to the semis' from Group-A. The other two teams in the group Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA - 4 pts), who despite recording a win against Air India, failed to make it to the knock-out phase while Karachi Jeelani Tigers (KJT) with four points was also also eliminated from the tournament.
At the end of the league matches of the pool A the teams poisitions were ONGC (13 pts), Air India (5), KJT (4) and UPCA (4).
In the league matches played today ONGC beat KJT by 39 runs at the K D Singh Babu stadium while at the Chowk stadium UPCA edge past Air India by 3 wickets.
ONGC opting to bat first posted a solid 213/5 in their stipulated 40 overs. Skipper Rizwan Shamshad's brisk 99-run partnership with Mayank Tehlan was the highlight of ONGC innings. Sandeep and Mohd Saif chipped in with invaluable 33 and 30 respectively.
Rashid, Azam Hussain and Ayaz claimed a wicket each for KJT, Karachi.
Karachi chasing a daunting target got off to a poor start losing the first three wickets for just 30 runs before Afsar Nawaz (87) and Fahdullahd Khan (36) revived the Pakistani side's hopes with solid efforts.
However Karachi unit found too hard to negotiate the pace and seam movements of Vikramjeet and were skittled out for 174. lose thier three wickets cheaply with only 30-runs on the board.
As many as eight batsmen of KJT were failed to reach the double figure mark, the wrecker in chief was Vikramjeet Malik who with his medium pace captured 5 wickets.
In the other Group-A match of the day at the Chowk stadium, UPCA, salvaged some pride in their last tie with a three-wicket victory against Air India.
Air India scored a healthy total of 230/9 in 40 overs. The main contributors were Sahafiq Khan (44) and Deepaak Joon (64).
Akhilesh Kushwaha was the pick of UPCA bowlers with 4/42 in his 8 overs.
In reply UPCA despite the disastrous start romped home in the penultimate ball of their innings, thanks largely to a fine 131-run stand for the fourth wicket between Parminder Singh (76) and skipper Taahir Abbas (55).
ONGC 213/5 in 40 overs ( Gagan Khoda 26, Sandeep 39, Rizwan 59, Mayaank 34; Mohd Saif 30, Rashid 1/40, Azam 1/23 and Hariz Ayaz 53) beat Karachi Jeelani Tigers 174 all out( Afsar Nawaz 87, Fahadullha 36; Vikramjeet 5/32, Varun Sood 2/27 and Saurabh 2/40) by 39 runs.
