New Zealand were without Jacob Oram after the all-rounder suffered a left hamstring injury.
They had already come on tour without dynamic opening batsman Jesse Ryder, out with a hand injury.
One-day specialist all-rounder Scott Styris was called up into the team following New Zealand's recent 2-0 Test series defeat against England while pace bowlers Michael Mason and Mark Gillespie were also selected.
James Marshall was recalled after being dropped from the Test side.
England made two changes to their Twenty20 line-up.
Wicket-keeper Tim Ambrose, who played in the Test series, was called up for his limited overs international debut after Phil Mustard was dropped from the one-day squad.
Ian Bell, normally a middle-order batsman, has been pencilled in as an opener after making 42 for Warwickshire against Glamorgan in a domestic Twenty20 earlier this week.
England also omitted left-arm quick Ryan Sidebottom, one of their star performers in the Test series.
Instead in-form Essex all-rounder Ravi Bopara was called up for his international debut in this form of cricket after missing out on England's two Twenty20 victories over New Zealand in February.
Nevertheless, England retained the bulk of the team that beat New Zealand by 50 runs in their last Twenty20 match in Christchurch on February 7.
The first of a seven-match one-day series between England and New Zealand starts at the Riverside on Sunday.
