Strauss has not played for England's limited overs side since last year's World Cup having scored just one half-century in his last 14 one-day internationals.
He has been called in as temporary cover for Alastair Cook, who is suffering with a shoulder injury.
Cook first felt his shoulder problem on the final day of the last Test at Trent Bridge and was unable to shrug it off in time to feature in Essex's Twenty20 Cup opener against Surrey at The Oval.
He was also overlooked for Friday's Twenty20 International at Old Trafford and was unable to train with the rest of the England squad on Saturday prior to Sunday's start of the five-match series.
Strauss is only due to stay with the squad as cover for Sunday's match but if Cook's injury continues, the selectors will consider taking him to Birmingham for the next match in the series on Wednesday.
