Sgt Ajantha Mendis is excepted to spin many more success tales for LankaColombo: Sri Lanka's unorthodox spinner Ajantha Mendis has been promoted to the rank of Sergeant in the army after his match-winning exploits in the six-nation Asia Cup.

Mendis helped his country win Sunday's final by taking six wickets for 13 as India were bowled out for 173. The finger spinner earned Man-of-the-series award for his tournament haul of 17 wickets on a hostile pitch.

The 23-year-old Carrom bowler, a gunner in Lankan Aramy's artillery regiment, was promoted five ranks in the army by the island's President Mahinda Rajapakse in recognition of his performance.

Mendis, who has an unique bowling style, plays domestic cricket for Sri Lanka Army and Wayamba Province.
