South Africa were 156 for four in reply to England's first innings 593 for eight declared, a deficit of 437 and still needing a further 238 runs to avoid the follow-on, at tea on the third day of the first Test at Lord's Saturday.

Ashwell Prince was 52 not out and AB de Villiers 38 not out.

This is the first of a four-Test series.
