Colombo: Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene won the toss and elected to bat in the first Test of three-match series against India at the SSC here on Wednesday.

Play is scheduled to start at 15:30 IST (10:00 GMT) after the first two sessions were lost due to the wet outfield. 42 overs are scheduled for the day's play if light permits.

Spin sensation Mendis made Test debut for Lanka. The Islanders have included seamer Kulasekera in place of injured Dilhara Fernando. opener Gambhir and stumper Dinesh Karthik is back in India Test fold.

The much awaited umpire referral system will be trialled in the ensuing series. It's an arrangement that will allow the sides to appeal to change a decision perceived to have been incorrect.

Both, the fielding and the batting sides, are allowed three unsuccessful appeals per innings - much like the system used in tennis. All the player needs to do is to make 'T' sign with both forearms at shoulder height.

Squads:

India: Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma.

Sri Lanka: Michael Vandort, Malinda Warnapura, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene (capt), Thilan Samaraweera, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), Chaminda Vaas, Nuwan Kulasekera, Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis.
