Lanka beat India to seal series 2-1

Colombo: Lankans outplayed their Indian counterparts to wrap up the third and final Test against India at P Saravanamuttu Stadium here on Monday.

The hosts chased down a measly victory target of 122 losing two wickets in the process. Warnapura remained unbeaten on 54 while Jayawardene made an undefeated 50.

Lankans got off to a poor start losing Vandort (8) and Sangakkara (4) in quick succession. However Warnapura and Mahela ensured no further damage as Lanka sailed past the target with eight wickets in hand and a day to spare.

Earlier, India resuming at 161/5, were bowled out for 268 in their second innings despite the fighting knocks from Rahul Dravid (68) and VVS Laxman (61 n o).

Lankan offie Murali claimed 3/99. Unorthodox spinner Mendis took 3/81 to finish with 26 wickets - record for a bowler in debut series.

Lanka won the first Test at SSC by an innings and 239 runs. India replied back strongly in the second Test to ensure parity in the series with a convencing 170-run win.

India 249 and 268 (Dravid 68, Laxman 61 n o; Mendis 3/81, Murali 3/99, Dhammika Prasad 2/60) lost to Lanka 396 and 123/2 (Malinda Warnapura 54 n o, Mahela Jayawardene 50 n o; Zaheer 1/22).
