London: South Africa captain Graeme Smith will miss Friday's third one-day international against England as he struggles to recover from a tennis elbow injury.
Smith was due to see a surgeon on Thursday to decide whether he will need an operation to cure the problem.
The opening batsman has no chance of featuring at The Oval and is unlikely to take any further part in a series England lead 2-0 with three matches to play.
Senior pro and all-rounder Jacques Kallis will don the captaincy role while Smith's deputy Boucher will continue as vice-captain.
South Africa need to win Friday's match at the Oval to keep the five-match series alive after suffering back-to-back defeats in the first two ties.
