PowerplayDubai: ICCI has come up with some crucial changes in the ODI format of the game. One major amendment allows the batting side to decide when to introduce either the second or the third power-play during their innings. The new rules give liberty to on-field umpires to consult the third umpire in case of unclean catches and also bar players from taking breaks in ODI matches.

The new rules, to be applicable from tomorrow, have been aimed at improving the the quality of one-day cricket matches.

Another major change permits bowling side to keep three fielders outside the 3--yard circle during the second and third power-play, as compared to the previous scenario where only two fielders were allowed.

Free-hit rule as well as the mandatory changing of the ball at the start of the 35th over of an innings has been retained.

"These amendments, which were unanimously approved by all 10 Full Members and the three Associate Member representatives on the CEC at its meeting at the end of June, are designed to improve the game for players, umpires and spectators," ICC said in a statement.
