Chandigarh Lions mauls Chennai superstars

Chandigarh LionsAhmedabad: The 10th match of the ICL20s Indian Championship featured the formidable Chennai Superstars take on the Chandigarh Lions at the sparkling new ICL facility, Sardar Patel Stadium, Ahmedabad. Experts predicted a high intensity encounter especially, looking into the fact that both sides were involved in the finals of the recently concluded ICL 20-20 domestic tournament. In a fascinating encounter that saw brilliant cricket from both sides saw the Lions emerge on top by a narrow margin of 8 runs. Daryl Tuffey was declared man of the match for his brilliant new ball spell.

Earlier in the evening Stuart Law, returning at the helm of affairs after an injury, won the toss and elected to field for the Superstars. The Lions opened with their experienced left –right combination of Elliott&Vincent who got the Lions off to a good start with the scorecard reading 26 for no loss at the end of the 3rd over. Elliott was looking in sparkling touch, playing some marvelous strokes on both sides of the field. The Superstars got the first breakthrough in form off Vincent"s wicket caught at mid on by Vignesh off Jesuraj in the 4th over. A brilliant Yorker by Nantie Hayward cut short the promising innings of Elliott, disturbing his furniture.

Elliott"s innings was worth 27 runs off 21 balls and included 4 fours and one sixes. A brilliant reflex catch off his own bowling won the combative Hayward his second scalp, with TP Singh"s wicket, to leave the Lions in a bit of a bother at 48/3 in the 7th over. The dashing southpaw Dinesh Mongia took on the Lions batting mantel scoring 17 runs off the 8th over from Syed Mohammed to get the Lions right back in the match placed at 79/3 at the end of the 9th over. The Lions" hundred came in 12th over with Mongia treating the well attended Sardar Patel stadium with some brilliant stroke play.

Stuart Law, introduced his strike bowler Shabbir in the 14th over who got into the act right away scalping the dangerous Mongia for a well made 47 off 29 balls including 8 fours and 1 six. Shabbir struck again in the same over, packing back the dangerous Cairns without troubling the scorers. The 15th over mark had the Superstars pull back the Lions juggernaut at 119/5. Superstars" new induction Hayward was working some great pace and picked up two wickets off same number of deliveries, in form of Gupta and Sarabjit to leave the Lions at 136/7 in the 17th over. Hayward ended his spell with impressive figures of 4/21. In the end the Lions folded their innings at a competitive 163/8 in their allotted 20 overs, setting up a fascinating second session.

The Chennai chase was off to a confident start with their formidable combination of Harvey&Vignesh taking the score to 22 for no loss at the end of the 3rd over. However it was Daryl Tuffey who had the last laugh breaking the dangerous partnership by scalping the attacking Vignesh of the first ball of the 4th over. Tuffey struck again in the 6th over getting the big wicket of Harvey. Harvey"s little cameo that lasted 16 balls and included 21 runs laced with two fours and one six. Tuffey struck again picking up his third scalp of the match, spoiling Stuart Law"s birthday, sending back the Superstars skipper to the Chennai dugout cheaply for 2. At the 6th over mark the Lions had the upper hand, with the Superstars scorecard reading 40/3.

Tuffey had delivered just what the skipper ordered with the new ball, ending his spell of 4 overs with 3 wickets costing only 13 runs. At the 11th over stage the Superstars were placed with the uphill task of needing another 93 runs off 54 balls at 10.8 runs per over. A brilliant counterattack from Sathish&Russel Arnold kept Chennai still in the hunt taking the score to 97/3 at the 13th over mark.

ICL 20-20, 2008/2009 Reports

Cairns brought on the experienced Hall in the 14th over who finally broke the brilliant 4th wicket partnership of 62 runs by castling the experienced Arnold for a well made 35 off 30 balls. With 5 overs to go the match was fascinatingly placed, with the Superstars needing 47 off 30 balls and the talented ICL –India captain Sathish. holding the key for the Chennai side. Malhotra got the upper-hand for the Lions, in the 16th over, getting the wicket of the prodigal Sathish who contributed with a well made 38 off 26 balls including 5 fours and 1 six.
