Earlier in the day Damien Martyn won the toss and elected to bat. Ahmedabad opened with their formidable combination of Campbell&Goodwin who stepped upon the gas pedal right from the word go, taking the score to 27 for no loss at the end of the 2nd over. Campbell was especially severe on the bowlers racing away to 28 runs off only 12 balls before falling to a shot to many in the 3rd over from Luv Ablish. Campbell's wicket did not bring any respite for the Chandigarh bowlers with Goodwin taking over the mantel, playing some delightful strokes all across the park. A stroke filled first five overs that witnessed 10 fours and 3 sixes took the Ahmedabad score to a phenomenal 67/1 at that stage of the match.
Goodwin brought about his brilliant half century in the 9th over, coming off only 25 balls including 6 fours and 2 sixes. The half way mark of their innings had the home side brilliantly placed at 107/2&Goodwin looking in ominous touch. Goodwin however could not carry on his brilliant knock for too long, castled by Rajesh Sharma in the 12th over. Goodwin's knock was worth 61 runs off only 31 balls; laced with 6 fours and 1 mighty six. Sodhi&Sanjeev Martin were determined not to loose the initial momentum and a 47 run partnership took the score to 165/4 in the 16th over, before Sodhi fell to a short delivery from Uniyal for a well made 23.
ICL Points Table
The Chandigarh bowlers came back strongly in the final death overs of the innings, also wickets at regular intervals, did pull back the Ahmedabad innings who managed only 35 runs in last five overs; finishing strongly overall at 197 all out in 19.5 overs. Luv Ablish who picked up three wickets in the last ended his spell with decent figures of 4/35.
The Chandigarh chase got off to a disastrous start with Gillespie packing back the talented Sarabjit in the first over, to leave the scorecard reading 2/1. The impressive Rakesh Patel struck the second blow in the next over, scalping the big wicket of Graeme Hick to leave the Chandigarh side in further trouble at 4/2. The Ahmedabad new ball bowlers were spot on giving on leeway to the Chandigarh batsmen, struggling at 16/3 at the five over mark. The half way mark of their innings had the Chandigarh chase reading a dismal picture with their top five batsmen back in the dugout, placed at 47/5; needing another 153 runs off the remaining 10 overs at a required rate of nearly 15 runs per over. A fighting 42 off 24 balls from karanveer Singh followed by a sparkling 45 by Amit Uniyal, was too little too late for the Chandigarh side falling well short of the humongous target by 39 runs.
