India-England to clash in 50th Test on Indian soil

Chennai: The first Test match between India and England which is being played amidst unprecedented security at Chennai, will be the 50th between the two countries in India.

In the 49 Test matches that India had played on home turf against England so far, India has won 13 and England 11, the remaining ending in draws.

India took on England last at the M A Chidambaram stadium in 1992-93 season when Md Azharuddin led India and Alec Stewart stood in for England, when regular captain Graham Gooch had to pull out on the morning of the match due to 'bad stomach'. However, India had won that Test by an innings and 22 runs, incidentally.

And, the two teams had first met in Chennai in 1933-34 season when Douglas Jardin led India while Col C K Naidu was the captain of India. England had won that match by 202 runs.
