'Test win will make everybody feel better'

New Delhi: Terror-struck India needed something symbolic to lift its spirit and this wonderful victory will make its people feel a little better although the wounds of Mumbai will never heal completely, feels former India skipper Sunil Gavaskar.

"At this stage, when the whole country was demoralised after what happened in Mumbai, India needed something symbolic to lift their spirits and this wonderful victory will make everybody feel a little better although the wounds of Mumbai won't heal completely," Gavaskar said.

Impressed by the way Sachin Tendulkar and Yuvraj Singh notched up a gritty 163-runs fifth-wicket partnership on a fifth day track, Gavaskar said the application of the Indian duo reflected the "fighting spirit" of the Indians.

In an interview to CNN-IBN channel Gavaskar said, "Scoring 387 runs on a fifth day pitch was not easy but the Indians did it. The way Sachin and Yuvraj build up the partnership brick by brick it showed the fighting spirit of the Indians."

Tendulkar, who scored an unbeaten 103 to guide India to victory in the first Test, has always been criticised for not being able to play a match winning knock in crunch situation but Gavaskar feels it is absolutely ridiculous.

Gavaskar described people's attitude to doubt his ability to score a match-winning innings as "absolutely ridiculous".

"There will always be people who will doubt your ability. Sachin has around 40 ODI centuries, around 16,000 ODI runs, another 41 Test centuries...I don't know what else the man needs to do, why people still doubt his ability. It is absolutely ridiculous," he said.
