Buchanan on talent hunt campaign

Kolkata: Coach John Buchanon, who had disastrous T-20 campaign with Kolkata Knight Riders in the inaugural IPL, today said extra efforts were needed to select new players to substitute Pakistan players, who would not make this time.

Former Australia's coach arrived here last night to supervise a three-day camp to pick up players among three dozen players called for the camp at Eden Gardens.

He said this time he and Sourav Ganguly have to work hard for selection of new brand of players among the local and national promising list.

Shah Rukh Khan's KKR had four Pakistanis- speed star Shoiab Akhtar, median pacer Umar Gul, batsman Salman Butt among others four players, who would not make this time due to current impasse between BCCI and PCB after Mumbai terror attacks on November 26 last year.

Buchanon said they will find out suitable players for T-20 among local and national talent pull for Kolkata side. Preference would be given to all rounder in the selection process, he added.

Buchanon also expressed in the capability of his captain Sourav Ganguly (36), who just retired from international competition as well as from first class cricket in home.

The Australian said it was not matter much whether you are in the 20s or in the 30s, it mattered how you use the opportunity.

The KKR in the inaugural IPL placed sixth in the eight-team competion destpite big names like Ricky Ponting, David Hussey and New Zealander Brandon McCulum, the last had prolific average.

Among new comers for trials are Md Ushrafuddin and Saturanj Gaekward, sons of former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin and Anshuman Gaekwad, a KKR soruce here said.

Besides old faces of Laxmi Ratan Shukla, medium pacer Ashoke Dinda, wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha, promising youngsters like Debobrata Pal, Anushtup Mazumder, Avik Chodhury, Ijaj Ansari and Railways' Sanjeeb Sanyal have been also called in the camp to be held between January 5-8 at Eden Gardens.

KKR have altogether called some 40 players in the camp for trials where captain Sourav Ganguly and Buchanon would short list for probables in the second IPL tournament, scheduled to begin in May.

Ajit Agarkar, Cheteswar Pujara, Iqbal Abdulla will not make it in the camp as they have Ranji semifinal match during the period.
