Bangalore: Former Indian captain Anil Kumble is expected to be fielded as the BJP candidate for the Lok Sabha elections from one of Bangalore's parliamentary constituencies in the upcoming Loksabha elections.
Karnataka BJP unit has sent a proposal to central committee for fielding former Test skipper Anil Kumble. Kumble is likely to contest from Bangalore North seat.
The Karnataka BJP unit has decided to field the Kumble from Bangalore North seat.
“You need to wait for the announcement. Bangalore (North) seat has still not been announced. It will be conveyed to you as soon as the party takes a decision on it," said party spokesperson Prakash Javadekar on Friday.
He was reacting to reports that the local leaders of the party recommended Kumble's candidature from Bangalore North which was won by former IPS officer H T Sangliana for the party in the last elections. Sangliana cross voted for the Congress in the July 22 trust vote in the Lok Sabha and was later disqualified by the Speaker under the anti-defection law.
Asked if there was any opposition in the party to the candidature of Kumble, owing to his lack of political exposure, the BJP denied it. “Our party is open to everyone. We encourage people from all walks of life. We have people from films, sports and many other fields. The party cadres and leaders are clear on this," Javadekar added.
