Sydney: Australia on Sunday defeated New Zealand by a run in a thriller T20 International cricket match at the Sydney Cricket Ground here.
Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin, making his captaincy debut, won the toss and elected to bat first.
Australia lost three wickets for 52 runs after seven overs, but David Hussey then bailed his side out and managed to keep the scoreboard ticking. Hussey top scored with 41 runs of 39 deliveries.
Australia scored 150 for the loss of seven wickets in 20 overs.
Chasing 151 to win, New Zealand lost two early wickets but as the innings progressed, they looked to be on top.
Wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum emerged the top scorer for the Kiwis, smashing 61 runs of just 47 deliveries.
New Zealand needed 14 runs in the last over to win the match, but finished up with 149 runs.
