Mumbai: Former Indian wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani has raised serious questions about Dhoni's ability as a wicket keeper.
"Dhoni doesn't have the copybook basics of a wicketkeeper" Kirmani said to news agency in India.
Dhoni a versatile player, says Kirmani
"He lacks the natural instincts of an athlete, which is very important for a wicketkeeper." Kirmani added.
Kirmani, who played 88 Tests and 49 ODIs between 1976 and 1986, also believes Dhoni may not be the best choice as India's long-term wicketkeeper.
"No player remains the same after four years. The agility and reflex of a player diminishes with age. The body and muscles start wearing out," said 59-year-old Kirmani. "And Dhoni is playing all three forms of the game round the year."
India are about to embark on an extensive tour of New Zealand, and have reserve wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik in their squad should management wish to rest Dhoni, from the line-up or the 'keeping duties, for the odd game or two.
