Cape Town: Mumbai Indians have made sure that they put their right foot on the first step towards IPL crown as they crushed Chennai Super Kings by 19 runs in the Indian Premier League opener at the Newlands.
Chasing a victory target of 166 runs, Chennai Super Kings could only manage 146/7 in their alloted overs.
The Sri Lankan duo of Sanath Jayasuriya and Lasith Malinga were on fire for Mumbai, having pushed Chennai against the wall.
Malinga was economical and sent back S. Badrinath, Parthiv Patel and rattled Dhoni's timber, getting the ball to reverse swing.
Jayasuriya snapped up Matthew Hayden, who was brilliantly caught by Zaheer Khan as Mumbai continued to peg Chennai back.
For Chennai Super Kings, Hayden was the top scorer with 44. Flintoff contributed 24, while Dhoni made 36. Abhishek Nayar won the "Maximum Number of Sixes" award.
Sachin Tendulkar was declared as "Man of the Match" for his unbeaten 59 off 49 balls.
