Durban: A fine all-round effort from the Punjab captain Yuvraj Singh was in vain as Royal Challengers upset Kings XI Punjab by eight runs in a thriller at Kingsmead on Friday.
Punjab's captain Yuvraj Singh, registered his first hat-trick of the IPL and scored a brilliant half century as Punjab enjoyed the upper hand for much of the match, but Royal Challengers struck back in style and took their team home right at the death.
Yuvraj dismissed Robin Uthappa, Jacques Kallis, and Mark Boucher with successive deliveries in Bangalore's innings of 9-145 and then made 50 off 34 balls with four sixes and three fours.
Put in to field by the Royal Challengers, Punjab started off well by dismissing of the top order early while keeping the run rate within manageable levels
Bangalore was in trouble at 84/6 in the 14th over But South African All-rounder Van der Merve plunered a quick 35 runs of just 9 deliveries and put together a 44-run partnership along with Kohli (16) to take the team to 145/9.
Kings XI bowler Yusuf Abdulla took 4-36, including a maiden, to become the leading wicket-taker in the IPL with 13 dismissals.
Punjab were off to a good start as Yuvraj (50) and Kara Goel (20) taking on the Bangalore bowlers. But they suffered a mid order collapse and were unable to regain their momentum and their target became almost impossible when Van der Merwe had Mahela Jayawardene caught in the covers, leaving Punjab needing 30 off 17 overs.
"We should have won the game but Bangalore bowled well," said Yuvraj, who was named man of the match .
