Port Elizabeth: A blistering half century by Mahela Jayawardene guided Punjab Kings XI to a six wicket victory against Kolkata Knight Riders at Port Elizabeth on Sunday.
Jayawardene's blistering 52 came off 41 balls which consisted of seven boundaries.
The match could have swung either way in the final overs, but Jayawardene and Irfan Pathan hold their nerve and took their side home in the final bowl of the final over. Punjab needed one run off the last delivery as Irfan Pathan clipped through mid wicket for a single.
Kolkata fielders are clearly the major culprits behind this defeat as they dropped four catches on the field.
Kings XI Punjab were off to a shaky start as they lost their Sangakkara dismissed by Ishant in the first over. However Katich and Sohail played cautiously and pulled their side out of the woods.
Then three dropped catches cost Kolkata dearly as Sohal ( 25) and Katich ( 34) cashed in. At the end of the ten overs Punjab's scored 81 for the loss of three.
Earlier Brad Hodge's (70*) brilliant half century helped Kolkata Knight Riders to post a challenging total of 153/3 against Punjab Kings XI at Port Elizabeth on Sunday. Hodges knock jcame off in just 43 balls and was studded with ten fours and one sixer. Ganguly (22) and Vab Wyk (18) also gave a good support to Hodge.
Piyush Chowla was the most successive bowler in Punjab line up with two wickets.
Mahela Jayawardene was declared the Man of the Match for his match winning innings of 52
