Chennai thrash Hyderabad

East London: Mahendra Singh Dhoni's (58 off 37) unbeaten half century and Shadab Jakati's (4/22) brilliant bowling performance helped Chennai Super Kings to thrash Deccan Chargers by 78 runs in East London on Monday.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Chennai Super Kings scored 178 for three wickets, with Matthew Hayden contributing 43 from 26 deliveries and Suresh Raina 32 off 19. Dhoni hit five boundaries and a six, sharing a 54-run stand for the third wicket with Suresh Raina, who faced 19 balls for his 32 runs. Hayden's brief cameo off 43 runs came off in 26 balls.

Chennai's bowlers then removed Deccan's top three batsmen for ducks inside three overs. Albie Morkel trapped Adam Gilchrist leg before wicket with the first ball of the innings, and then Sudeep Tyagi bowled Herschelle Gibbs in the next over.

Morkel returned to dismiss VVS Laxman (0) in his next over but was unlucky not to claim top-scorer Dwayne Smith (49), as he was put down twice by Chennai bowlers.

Hyderabad's faint hope ended when Smith was trapped leg before by Le Jakati, who ended with an impressive 4/22 from his four overs.

Sri Lankan off-spinner Muralitharan then helped cleaned-up the tail, taking two wickets in successive balls, Tirumalsetti Sulman (17) and Rudra Pratap Singh (2) both caught on the boundary by Murali Vijay.

Chennai now tops the IPL points table with nine points from eight games. Kings XI Punjab, Delhi Daredevils, Deccan, and Bangalore - all have eight points.
