Centurion: Chennai Super Kings beat Kings XI Punjab by 12 runs on the Duckworth Lewis method in a rain-curtailed match at Centurion on Thursday.
It was the blistering 100-run stand between Matthew Hayden (89) and captain Dhoni ( 57) that helped Chennai to post 185-3 after the match was reduced to 18 overs.
Hayden blasted eight boundaries and six sixes in 58 balls, while Dhoni faced 27 balls, hitting seven boundaries and two sixes.
In reply, Punjab Kings were restricted to 174-3 in their allotted 18 overs despite an unbeaten 90-run third wicket partnership between Yuvraj Singh (58 not out) and Mahela Jayawardene (44 not out) and another half-century by Simon Katich.
Punjab where off to a bad start as when lost opener Sunny Sohal second ball of their innings, clean-bowled by a full-length Morne Morkel delivery.
Simon Katich's lighting counter attack raised the hopes in Punjab as he reached his 50 from just 24 balls, including four sixes, but he was dismissed next ball when he cut Lakshmipathy Balaji to Shadab Jakati at deep point.
Needing 30 from the final two overs, and with Yuvraj in full flight, Punjab looked well placed but a superb penultimate over from Suresh Raina cost just six runs to blunt their charge.
