Jayawardene steals victory for Punjab

Kimberly: A late cameo by Mahela Jayawardene( 43 off 28 balls) helped Kings XI Punjab to beat Deccan Chargers by 3 wickets at De Beers Diamond Oval, Kimberley.

Kings XI Punjab needed 8 runs off the last over , Lee and Chawla kept their nerves and safely guided their side to the much-needed win with one ball to spare.

Punjab were off to a solid atart as openers Katich and Sohal scored 40 runs in first four overs. Hyderabad's hat-trick hero Rohit Sharma came and nipped out 2 wickets in an over to bring the match on an even keel.

Even though Sangakkara ( 25) and Yuvraj (18) tried to build a good partnership, they both fell in the over before strategy break.

Mahela Jayawardene (43) then played a gem of innings that carried Kings XI hopes before being run out trying to steal the second run.

Earlier Symonds 60(37) explosve half century century powered Deccan Chargers to 168/5 in twenty overs.

Symonds was unbeaten on 60 (37) that was studded with four big sixes.

Symonds and Venu Gopal shared a partnership of 95 runs off just 57 balls which is the highest partnership for the 5th wicket in al IPL matches.

Mahela Jayawardene was declared the Man of the Match for his match winning innings of 43
