South Africa wins battle of nerves

London: South Africa pulled off a dramatic one run victory over New Zealand in a thrilling Group D clash of the ICC World Cup at Lords on Tuesday night.

Both teams had already advanced to the super stage of the world cup at the expense of Scotland and the result made no difference to the draw.

South Africa could only manage 128 for seven after they were put into bat by New Zealand stand-in skipper Brendon McCullum. However, Proteas fought back into the match after New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum looked to be winning the contest for the Kiwis.

New Zealand were off to a bad start as they lost Martin Guptill (6) and Neil Broom (1) cheaply.

However, McCullum, who was rather cautious, managing just six boundaries in his 54-ball knock, and Taylor did a good job in repairing the innings.

New Zeland lost its momentum after they lost McCullum in the 17nth over.

Needing 15 off the last over, the Kiwis could only end up with 127/5.

Sri Lanka play West Indies and defending champions India face Ireland in the last group matches at Trent Bridge on Wednesday with all four teams already assured of places in the second round.
