Wadekar lost, despite Sachin's support

Mumbai: Despite strong backing from Sachin Tendulkar and a few other former cricketers Ajit Wadekar miserably failed in the elections to the post of President of the Shivaji Park Gymkhana.

Wadekar lost by a huge margin of 80 votes to former Mumbai Sheriff and politician Jagannath Hegde whose panel swept almost all the seats at Gymkhana.

Wadekar's younger brother Ashok, a former club cricketer, was elected as the vice president.

Gymkhana is India's cricket's famous nursery in central Mumbai that has produced a host of Test cricketers in the past including Vijay Manjrekar, Subhash Gupte and Ramakant Desai.
