Colombo: Legendary Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan on Thursday set a new world record by bowling most number of career maiden Overs in the Test cricket history during the third day's play of first Test match against visiting Kiwis.
Sri Lanka's champion spinner broke Australia's Shane Warne's record of 1,751 maiden Overs in Test cricket.
The record came in the 79th over of the first innings during the first Test for a maiden. It was the 27th over of Murali and the batsman on the crease against whom the deliveries were bowled was Jacob Oram.
Warne has bowled 1751 maiden overs in 145 Test matches, while Murali played only 128 Test matches to broke this record.
Muralitharan is the highest wicket-taker in both Tests and in ODIs. He took the wicket of Gautam Gambhir in February this year in Colombo, to surpass Wasim Akram's ODI record of 502 wickets.
