Kiwis Sri Lanka to clash in tri-series

Colombo: The hosts Sri Lanka will clash with New Zealand in the opening match of  the triangular series at Colombo on Tuesday.

India is the third team in the tournament and they will take on Sri Lanka on September 11.

Team India start as favourites despite missing injured opener Virender Sehwag and paceman Zaheer Khan, having beaten both New Zealand and Sri Lanka in their own backyards in their last one-day series.

MS Dhoni's team can claim the number one spot in the Reliance Mobile ICC ODI Championship, provided they win all the matches in the tournament. India are just one point behind leaders South Africa, with 126 points, but a victory here can vault them to the No. 1 spot by a handsome margin.

India are seeking a hat-trick of wins in Sri Lanka after clinching a pair of bilateral five-match series in August 2008 and in February this year.

Daniel Vettori's New Zealanders salvaged some of their reputation when they stunned the hosts in two Twenty20 internationals last week after being whitewashed in the preceding two-Test series.

Lankans have won the ODI series in Pakistan before the series had to be aborted because of a terror attack on the players, and before that, beat Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.

Each team will play two league matches before the top two qualify for the final on September 14. The hosts clash with New Zealand in Tuesday's opening game.
