Johannesburg: Big relief for India as dashing opener Gautam Gambhir was cleared to play in India"s first game of the tournament against Pakistan on September 26.
BCCI in a statement said that Gambhir would figure in the game against Pakistan after having missed the lone warm-up game against New Zealand.
"He was cleared by the BCCI experts when he underwent a fitness test in Mumbai before the team's departure. I understand hes playing in the first match," said BCCI secretary N Srinivasan here.
India are already an injury-hit side going into the tournament, missing the services of vice captain Yuvraj Singh, star opener Virender Sehwag and pacer Zaheer Khan.
Gautam Gambhir was nursing a groin strain ahead of the tournament. Gambhir did not play in the team's only practice match against New Zealand
Yuvraj Singh is ruled out the Champions trophy as he suffered figure injury during the net practice.
