Mumbai: Batting legend Sunil Gavaskar on Thursday compared Dhoni's brilliant century against Australia with Kapil Dev's historic 175-run knock against Zimbabwe during India's successful 1983 World Cup campaign.
A spectacular century from Mahendra Singh Dhoni ( 124) helped India defeat Australia by 99 runs in the second one-day international in Nagpur to level the seven-match series 1-1."
"It was one of the most brilliantly made century you'll see," he said. "It was reminiscent of the way Kapil Dev got that 175 in the 1983 World Cup"
Gavaskar had earlier descibed Kapil's unbeaten 175-run knock against Zimbabwe during India's successful 1983 World Cup campaign as the "best one-day innings" ever.
Former Indian captain also noted that Dhoni has changed from a might hitter to a run accumulator in the ODI cricket.
"Dhoni is playing according to the requirement of the situation," he said. "The best part about his batting is that he keeps the strike rotating with ones and twos to put pressure on the fielders."
Gavaskar predicts a great future for the Indian captain and even ecompared his statics to former Australian captain Adam Gilchrist.
With the third ODI to be played in Delhi on Saturday, Gavaskar predicted that it would be a low-scoring affair.
