Mumbai: Zaheer Khan is all set to a make comeback into Test team after putting an impressive performance in his first competitive match since returning from injury.
Zaheer bowled 42 overs in Mumbai's Ranji Trophy match against Punjab, taking match figures of seven wickets for 152.
The fast bowler is now certain to be picked for the Test series when the national selection panel meets at Mumbai on Tuesday to pick the Indian squad for the three-match home series against Sri Lanka.
Zaheer, if he finds his way back, will be returning to the Indian team after the T20 world cup in England.
The pace man sustained a shoulder injury in the second edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in May-April which kept him out of action for four months.
The selection panel, led by Krishnamachari Srikkanth, would be keen to have Zaheer's experience and expertise, which could be crucial if India are to stretch their home record of not losing a Test match to Sri Lanka in their previous 14 encounters.
Ashish Nehra would also hope to be back in Test cricket, having played the last of his 17 matches back in 2004 against Pakistan in Rawalpindi.
What brightens Nehra's prospects is the steep decline of gangling pacer Ishant Sharma who was hailed as a true find one season ago but looks a pale shadow of himself now.
