Gambhir who played a superb innings of 167 from 215 deliveries was the hero of the day. His innings consisted of 15 boundaries.
Indians were off to a spectacular start as the openers Gambhir and Sehwag had guided India to 131 for no loss at lunch after skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat on a Green Park pitch that offered little encouragement to either the pace bowlers or spinners.

Sehwag was shaky initially but once he found his feet, the Sri Lankan bowlers couldn't stem the flow of runs. At the other end, Gambhir's impregnable defence and his controlled aggression made life difficult for the bowlers.
Gambhir and Dravid added 137 for the second wicket, before Muralitharan pulled off a brilliant caught and bowled for Sri Lanka's second wicket of the day.
Rahul Dravid was in top form and he looked solid on his way to an unbeaten 85. Sachin Tendulkar, who joined Dravid in the final hour, was 25 not out.
It was the first time India had made 400 in a day in a Test.
Muralitharan finished with figures of 2-100 from 18 overs.
