India wins by an innings & 144 runs

Kanpur: India beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 144 runs in the second Test at Kanpur on Friday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-game series. This is India's 3rd biggest win in Test cricket and also the 100th Test win in their 432nd outing.

India's previous best margin of victory was by an innings and 119 runs, achieved in 1994.

India is the sixth nation to win 100 Test matches, following Australia (332), England (310), West Indies (152), South Africa (120) and Pakistan (102).

In reply to India's massive total of 642, Sri Lanka were all out for 229 in the first innings and the following on folded up for 269 in the second.

Batting first, Sehwag, Gambhir and Dravid scored big hundreds as India posted a massive 642.

Sreesanth was the 'wrecker-in-chief' for India on the third day as he picked up five Lankan first innings wickets to give India a huge lead.

Following-on, Sri Lanka started terribly losing their first four batsmen in one session. Samaraweera and Mendis delayed the inevitable with a 73-run dogged stand for the 9th wicket. Harbhajan Singh took three for 98 while debutant Pragyan Ojha bagged two for 36. Thilan Samaraweera  top scored the innings  with 78.

India began with pace in the morning and Zaheer struck in his first over - the second of the day - by removing Angelo Mathews for 15.

Sreesanth was adjudged as the man of the match for his spell of 5/75 in the first innings.

The Test would be especially memorable for Dravid, who hit his 28th Test century and became the fourth highest scorer with 11,267 runs after surpassing retired Australian captain Allan Border (11,174).
