Mumbai: Virender Sehwag fell short of triple century as he was dismissed for 293 on day three of the third and final Test against Sri Lanka, at the Brabourne stadium, in Mumbai.
Explosive opener was looking to become the first player in history to score three international triple tons but he pushed one straight back to Muttiah Muralitharan, who juggled but managed to hold on to the catch to end Sehwag's remarkable knock that comprised of 40 fours and seven sixes.
However, Sehwag's 251-ball innings set up India to go for a victory with a lead already in excess of 50 runs.
Sehwag is the first Indian to hit six double centuries in Test cricket and his knock is the 38th double hundred by an Indian. Rahul Dravid has five double centuries to his credit while Sunil Gavsakar and Sachin Tendulkar have hit four each.
