Ponting leads Aussies into Boxing Day

Melbourne: Australian captain Ricky Ponting won the toss and elected to bat in the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan, after recovering from injury to lead the side at the MCG.

Pakistan were missing the services of pace spearhead Umar Gul who was out injured. Abdur Rauf replaced him for the Test while off-spinner Saeed Ajmal was preferred over leg-spinner Danish Kaneria.


Australia, on the other hand, were boosted by captain Ricky Ponting's return to fitness while paceman Peter Siddle returned from injury to replace Clint McKay.


Australia: Ricky Ponting (c), Doug Bollinger, Michael Clarke, Brad Haddin, Nathan Hauritz, Mike Hussey, Simon Katich, Mitch Johnson, Marcus North, Shane Watson, Peter Siddle, Clint McKay (12th man).

Pakistan: Mohammad Yousuf (c), Imran Farhat, Salman Butt, Faisal Iqbal, Misbah-ul-Haq, Umar Akmal, Kamran Akmal, Mohammad Aamer, Saeed Ajmal, Abdur Rauf, Mohammad Asif, Shoaib Malik (12th man).
