Simons says it's 'strange' to play SA

Johannesburg: India's new bowling coach Eric Simon's first big assignment will be against his own country South Africa.

South Africa is scheduled to play two Tests and three ODI's in India after the ongoing Bangladesh Tri series.

"It will be a bit strange that my big test will be against my own country," Simons told an English daily

"But that's how it goes in professional sport these days. Gary Kirsten is already with the Indian team for a while now and even Andy Flower of Zimbabwe coaches England ," said the former South African coach, who was on Monday named as India's new bowling consultant for the two Tests against Bangladesh and the subsequent home series against South Africa.

The 47-year-old South African said everything happened very quickly last week before the BCCI signed him up, adding that he would first see how things panned out before considering a more permanent appointment.

Simons, represented his country as a medium-pace bowler and lower-order batsman in 23 one-day internationals between 1994 and 1995 and took up coaching after retirement.

South African coach Mickey Arthur feels Simons' appointment would "add a very interesting dimension" to his side's tour of India next month.

"Although we can share a couple of beers in India, we certainly can't use Afrikaans calls now too much," Arthur jested.
