Brendon McCullum, who was on an overnight score of 94, smashed an inspired 104 that forced the visitors to chase 106. Australia reached the small target without losing any wicket before lunch of fifty day.
The middle-order duo frustrated their rivals with a resilient 126-run stand as the hosts reached stumps on 369-6, a second-innings lead of 67.
But when McCullum was dismissed for 104 in the fourth over of the day it marked the beginning of the end as Ryan Harris picked up three wickets in three overs and the home side were bowled out for 407.
