Lahore: The chances of Shoaib Akhtar to make a return in the international arena in the Asia Cup for the Pakistan 15-man squad seems slim after he failed to impress the selectors and some of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials during a fitness test conducted here.
While former skipper Shoaib Malik, showed no signs of fitness problems performing tasks easily, Akhtar who was made to bowl 10 overs on trott looked completely exhausted towards the end.
“His pace went down and there was also this slight limp which left the selectors unconvinced," The News quoted sources privy to the fitness test, as saying.
Insiders said that despite some issues, Akhtar stands a 70 percent chance of making it into the squad for the Asia Cup, which would be played in Sri Lanka from June 15 to 24.
Pakistan"s squad for the quadrangular one-day tournament is due to be announced today (Thursday).
The Rawalpindi express' the nick name given by many commentators and the Pakistan cricket followers for his express pace, last made his international appearance against Australia in Dubai on May 7, 2009.
