New Zealand have called up Peter Ingram to replace opening batsman Jesse Ryder, who is ruled out because of an elbow injury, for their upcoming tri-series with Sri Lanka and India.
Aaron Redmond was tipped to be coach Mark Greatbatch's first choice to fill the void left by Ryder's withdrawal, but the flamboyant batsman is currently unavailable for selection.
"We considered a few players but felt that an experienced opener was required so Ingram got the nod," Greatbatch said of the talented right-hander, who scored a half-century on ODI debut against Bangladesh earlier this year.
Both Daniel Vettori and Brendon McCullum are on paternity leave, and the tourist will be lead by Ross Taylor.
The squad will depart for Sri Lanka on August 1 and the first match is against India on August 10. This week the players travel to Australia for three 50-over practice games against Maharashtra in Darwin.
