New Delhi: Pace bowler Munaf Patel will join India's squad for the remaining matches of the ongoing triangular one-day series in Sri Lanka as cover for Ishant Sharma, who suffered an ankle injury and missed the first game against New Zealand, officials said on Thursday.
"Munaf Patel is joining the Indian team in Sri Lanka as an additional member of the squad. He will reach Dambulla tomorrow," Indian cricket board secretary N. Srinivasan said in a statement.
Munaf was part of the Test squad, but wasn't named in the original touring party. Karnataka seamer who made his debut in Tests against Sri Lanka, Abhimanyu Mithun was preferred over Munaf, who sat out all three Tests. However, Mithun bowled only four overs in the opening one-dayer before suffering a heat stroke.
India lost against New Zealand by 200 runs in the tri-series opener in Dambulla on Tuesday and face Sri Lanka in their next game on Monday.
New Zealand clash with Sri Lanka on Friday. Each side will play the other twice in the preliminary group stage before the top two advance to the final on August 28.
Patel, 27, has so far taken 47 wickets in 43 one-day internationals.
