England has serious faith on their out-of-form opener Alastair Cook as they have retained him and named an unchanged outfit for the third npower Test against Pakistan scheduled to begin on Wednesday at The Oval.
No one seriously expected the selectors to lose faith in their vice-captain at this stage, despite a loss of form which has brought the opener only 100 runs in his last seven Test innings.
So it proved as national selector Geoff Miller not only confirmed Cook's place for the Test which starts on Wednesday, but everyone else's from the team which beat Pakistan at Edgbaston to go 2-0 up with two to play.
Tim Bresnan, 12th man last week, is retained as cover ahead of his fellow Yorkshire seamer Ajmal Shahzad. But the plan is for him to join the squad in London as cover on the eve of the Test on Tuesday only, before rejoining a county match against Durham at Chester-le-Street which starts on Monday.
"We were delighted with the way the team performed at Edgbaston in the second Test," Miller said.
"To put together dominant performances in back-to-back Test matches is a credit to the team's hard work, but the key remains consistency throughout the duration of the series.
"Tim Bresnan hasn't been named in the squad but will provide bowling cover just prior to the Test starting, before returning to play for Yorkshire in their LV= County Championship match against Durham."
