In a tightly contested CLT20 opener, Highveld Lions edged past Mumbai Indians by 9 runs in the wanderers stadium at Johannesburg yesterday.
After winning the toss the Mumbai Indians captain Sachin Tendulkar put the Lions to bat first and the Lions put on a challenging total of 186/5 in their quota of 20 overs. Left-handed opener Jonathan Vandiar was the star performer for the hosts as he hit a valiant 71 with three sixes and four boundaries in his innings. While Niel McKenzie made a crucial half century(56*) down the order to help the Lions finish on a high.
The Mumbai Indian bowlers struggled for line and length with Zaheer Khan and spinner Harbhajan going for a handful of runs. Lasith Malinga was the only bowler who kept it tight and picked up three wickets in the innings.
Mumbai Indians coming out to chase down the target with openers Shikhar Dhawan and Sachin Tendulkar started off impressively. The duo put on an opening stand of 83 run in 9.3 overs until Dhawan was dismissed. Rayudu coming in at No 3 didn't last long as he was caught short of his crease while trying to sneak a single.
Tendulkar however was looking very dangerous along with homeboy JP Duminy, and the Mumbai Indians were cruising along at a very good rate. But the Mumbai Indians lost momentum as soon as Tendulkar was dismissed for 69 runs.
Although Keiron Pollard hit some big ones to bring the Mumbai Indians closer to the victory target, it was not enough. The team finally ended at 177/6 in 20 overs.
For the Lions, Shane Burger took 2 wickets. Jonathan Vandiar was declared 'Man of the Match".
