Durban: Chennai Super Kings beat Central Stags by a comprehensive margin of 57 runs in the third match of the Airtel Champions League T20 after a superb half century by Badrinath in the first innings and a disciplined bowling performance by the bowling attack in the second innings at Durban.
Batting first the team from Chennai put on a score of 151 in the quota of 20 overs. Subramanium Badrinath was impressive for the Superkings as he stroked a fine unbeaten half century. Super Kings got off to a shaky start as Hayden and Suresh Raina got out in two successive overs.
However, Badrinath stood tall to put an excellent partnership with Anirudh Srikanth to help the Super Kings put up a challenging target of 152. Morkel chipped in with a quick-fire 26* as well.
Chasing 152, the Central Stags never looked like chasing down the target as they lost wickets in regular intervals.
They got off to a worst possible start losing three wickets in the first six overs of their innings.
Morkel got the first breakthrough off Peter Ingram
Laxmipathy Balaji picked up his first scalp in his first over to give the second breakthrough for the Super Kings. Balaji was very impressive as he kept it very tight thoughout his spell.
Captain Jamie How(13) who was looking good at the middle was the third man to be dismissed off the bowling of R Ashwin, who got him clean bowled.
Then spin pro Muttiah Muralitharan did more damage as he picked up two Central Stag batsman in his very first over. Matthew Hayden at slip took a brilliant catch at first slip to dismiss Mathew Sinclair. Then skipper Dhoni took a fine catch behind the wicket in the fifth ball of Murali's over to dismiss Barnet.
Murali eventually finished off with 2 wickets giving away 15 runs in his spell of 4 overs.
R Ashwin got his second scalp as Dhoni did a start bit of work behind the wicket to stump Brendon Diamanti to put the Stags in dismal state.
Dough Bollinger got the seventh wicket of Bevan Griggs(9) who was caught behind the wicket by skipper Dhoni.
Doug Bracewell who made a valiant 30 off 28 deliveries was the eight batsman to be dismissed off the bowling off Laxmipathy Balaji.
Bracewell going for a big shot just managed to get a thick inside edge onto his stumps. Then Balaji followed it up with another wicket of Mathew Mayson who hit a six and a boundary before heading back towards the pavillion.
Bollinger then finsihed it up to pick up the final scalp McClenaghan. Hayden took a superb catch at first slip as the Stags were allout for 94 runs.
The score was Central Stag's lowest ever total in T20 cricket.
