Simon Katich and Shane Watson hit a delightful century each in the tour opener against the toothless Board Presidents XI bowling attack in day one of the three day practice match in Chandigarh.
The duo shared a superb 207 run opening stand and they were handling the Presidents bowling attack with ease. Watson spanked 115 runs before he was dismissed by Piyush Chawla after facing 199 deliveries and hitting 16 boundaries. He fell while trying to go for an ambitious shot and was clean bowled by Chawla.
At the other end, Katich scored 104 runs off 178 balls which included 15 fours, while Michael Clarke was on 43 at stumps.
Katich was twice lucky as he was dropped by Shikhar Dhawan off Jaidev Unadkat while on 60 and by Ajinkaya Rahane off Pragyan Ohja two runs later. He later retired and was replaced by Ponting who was batting on 42 at stumps.
But besides the let off, the two dominated the proceedings and recorded highest opening run stand for the first wicket in the track in a first class match.
For the Presidents XI, Ohja was the only impressive bowler who managed to trouble the Aussies. He was very economical as he conceded just 23 runs in 21 overs he bowled in the day.
Earlier, Ricky Ponting had won the toss and elected to bat first.
