Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni lauded his teammate VVS Laxman who played a marvellous knock to give India a win against Australia in the first Test in Mohali. Laxman's never-say-die attitude is what makes him 'very very special", feels Dhoni.
Laxman had been complaining of severe back pain since Sunday. Overcoming his back injury, VVS Laxman played a gritty innings of unbeaten 73 to guide India home by a 1-wicket margin. In the first innings, he came to bat at number 10 due to the pain and was accompanied by his runner Gautam Gambhir.
Resuming the final day's play at 55/4, India slumped to 124/8 and looked like conceding defeat to the Australians. However, Laxman along with Ishant Sharma played a standout partnership which eventually helped India secure a win.
Skipper Dhoni was delighted with his knock and considered it to be very special.
“VVS was very special always. He has the ability to rotate strike and churn the runs at any stage and he did a wonderful job for us. The way he batted was very special," Dhoni said.
Dhoni also showered praises for Ishant Sharma, who held his nerve and gave the perfect support to Laxman. Sharma who has shown in the past that he can hang on, once again proved his mettle. He played it very smart, making good judgments of the bowlers and made sure he complemented Laxman at the other end.
“Ishant showed a lot of character. It was a big task at lunch for us. With just two wickets left, we just wanted the dressing room to be calm and cool. Ishant battled it out there and got crucial boundaries at important times," he said.
